What is the best material for measuring dry powders in chemistry?
It is important to consider Stainless Steel, Teflon, Glass, Plastic, Aluminum, and Weighing Paper.
How to know one mixture from another
Stainless Steel
These can be beneficial due to their smooth service and easy availability. They are often non-reactive although some ingredients like bentonite clay should no be used with any metal measuring scoops/spoons/pans due to their ability to react.
Teflon (PTFE)
Often Teflon coats a tool made of a different material with the intent of providing a nonstick surface ideal for minimizing product loss.
Glass
While glass is great for beakers and not causing additional reactions, it is not the best measuring medium. It can allow powder to cling to it and when pouring into another container this can cause a significant amount of product loss.
Plastic
Regular plastic will cause static and powders will be lost. There is an option for anti static plastic that will reduce the amount of static electricity caused.
Aluminum
Aluminum is a lightweight option that can be coated with an anti-static layer.
Weighing Paper
Weighing paper can be a viable option. It will increase precise powder transfer, it may not be the most green option though as a new paper will needed for each material used to ensure sanitary non reactive isolated variable procedures.
Additional Anti Static measures
Anti static wipes and brushes can be used to reduce the adherence of powder. Spatulas can help transfer. Low humidity environment can reduce clumping and the static electricity that causes dry powder to stick to various materials.
Teflon Disclaimer
- Teflon – Resistant to almost all acids, bases, and organic solvents, non-stick nature, stable in various temperatures, and acts as an electrical insulator. If using fluorine gas or molten alkali metals consider potential alternatives.
